The Fibre Optics Communications - OPCOM course delivers efficient, practical training exercises on state-of-the-art components at a reasonable price point.
Students study the key characteristics of fibre optic cables, digital and analogue laser transmitters and receivers for 850nm multimode (MM), 1310nm and 1550nm single mode (SM) optical transmission, optical splitters and wave-division multiplexing devices.

Subjects Covered: • Attenuation Measurement • Splitter Measurement – Loss, Splitting Ratio and Isolation • WDM Measurement – Loss, Filtering and Isolation • Optical Sources and Transmitter Concept - Duty Cycle, Data Rate, Output Power, Rise/Fall Time • Digital Data Transmission: Ethernet and BER Measurement • Optical Detector and Receiver Concepts - Photodiode Current Measurement • WDM – Wavelength Division Multiplexing • Data Protection between Two Units
Structure: • EB-180 active control board - three digital transceivers: 850nm MM, 1310nm SM and 1550nm SM • Passive Optical Module – optical splitters and WDM • Fibre Optic Cable Module – set of single mode and multiple mode fibre optic cables • Base workstation • Dual trace, 100MHz oscilloscope • Optical power meter • Student software
